We were approached by one of Melbourne’s largest cemeteries to develop a system for the cemetery industry that met the Australian Standard AS 4744.1:2025. The challenge was to meet the standard while keeping the system lightweight and easy to handle. Specially designed extrusions were used and the finished product was certified by a qualified engineer. It proved successful, and other products followed, such as safety lids and tread plate decking.
The cemetery industry was virtually unregulated, and within the cemeteries grave diggers would fashion their own style of shoring from steel frames to plywood and timber panels with timber or steel spreaders. This kind of shoring often failed because it was never engineered by a qualified structural engineer. In 2000 the Australian Standard for shoring was introduced, and all excavations, whether trenches or graves, have to meet it. As managers, trustees or employees, you are responsible for ensuring a safe environment for your workers and anyone else visiting your cemetery.
